What you’ll be doing:

We have an exciting new position for a Software Development Manager who will manage two medium-sized web-based software development teams with both U.S.- and Cancun-based developers.  This position will be responsible for the software development for two of Vanco’s product lines (one product line for each team).  One of these product lines is a platform that manages approximately 1600 e-commerce sites for K-12 school districts.  The other product line is a web-based tool that helps band directors and music teachers manage their work

As a team, we follow the Scrum process, including two-week sprints, daily standup meetings, sprint planning, etc. We use Microsoft technologies on the back end, primarily C#, MVC, web services, and SQL Server, and on the front end, we are standardizing on Angular 2.  We are looking to retire some older technologies.

Because this position leads two teams, we are looking for an experienced leader with 12-20 years of overall experience. In this role, you can expect a balance between leading the team, mentoring junior developers, and hands-on technical work.

The current makeup of the team is five U.S.-based software developers (four of whom are in Bloomington, MN) and six open positions for software developers and QA in Cancun, Mexico.  In this role, you will be involved in the hiring process and, if interested, will visit the Cancun office periodically.

You will be given a fair amount of autonomy to lead the team, distribute the workload, architect solutions, and organize the sprints as appropriate.

Manage two web-based, customer-facing software products, including working with our Product Management team to plan and estimate work.

  • Lead software development projects, including design, development, requirements review, managing scope, and delegating work to junior developers.
  • Manage two software development teams, including mentoring junior developers, establishing processes, and being responsible for the team’s output.
  • Ensure that the scrum process is being used efficiently, and leading (or delegating the leadership of) daily standup meetings, sprint demos, sprint planning, sprint retrospectives, etc.
  • Ensure that the application is stable and that escalated support tickets are being addressed in a timely manner.

Who you are:

  • Your degree is a BS in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Overall you have:
    • 12 or more years software development experience
    • 3 or more years’ experience leading software development teams
    • 5 or more years’ experience developing web applications

  • You are self-directed and great with details
  • You display excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • You can troubleshoot a problem and come to a solution

It’s a bonus if you have experience with Angular and React as well as test-driven development and unit testing.
